Piha is famous for its surf, black sand and beautiful surroundings. Like other west coast beaches the surf and undertow can be dangerous, so if the kids are going for a swim ensure you watch them at all times. A much safer spot for young children to swim is in the stream next to the beach, near Lion Rock (the huge rock between Piha and North Piha beaches). As well as swimming there are rocks to explore, a playground and picnic spots on the grass. There isn’t a lot of shade at Piha beach, so bring a big umbrella. The beach is about an hour's drive from the city, but is really worth the trip. Take lots to eat and drink it's a long walk to the nearest cafe but great chips there!
