The school's pupils cover Year 1 to Year 6, and represent about twenty different nationalities. All the national curriculum areas are taught at Hay Park, but there is a special focus on literacy and numeracy.
Elwyn Richardson was the first Principal of Hay Park School. He has been described as an innovative ‘pioneer’ New Zealand educator. His approach to teaching emphasized the importance of encouraging children to express their thoughts and emotional responses in relation to their own experiences.
