North Harbour Gymnastics Centre (Inc.) is the product of nearly 40 years of gymnastics development on the North Shore. In 1987 the Centre was established as an amalgamation of the North Shore Gymnastics Club, East Coast Bays Gymnastics Club, Birkenhead Gymnastics Club and North Shore YMCA Rhythmic Gymnastics Club. The Centre was able to operate from one venue (apart from rhythmic) in 1990 when vacant commercial premises were obtained in Kaimahi Place, Wairau Valley. In 1991 a move was made to Cherry Lane off Porana Road. The final move was made in August 1992 when the North Shore City Council completed the new stadium known as the North Shore Events Centre and Gymnastics Centre. Since 1992 the Centre has grown from strength to strength. It is the largest gymnastics club in the Auckland area and is the almost exclusive provider of gymnastics services on the North Shore. A satellite centre was set-up at the Hibiscus Coast in September 2004.
The Centre is run by a board, assisted by parent support committees for both rhythmic and artistic and full time coaching staff who look after the Men's and Women's competitive, Gymnastics For All and schools programmes.
Our Roll of Honour is a recognition of our Presidents, Life Members and Representative Gymnasts. It is indicative of the quality of our gymnasts that we have to restrict the list to only those that have represented NZ at either World Championships, Commonwealth Games or Olympics. There have been many more who have been to other overseas venues wearing New Zealand Colours.
Fifty years on from when New Zealand Gymnastics was formed in a Hamilton tea rooms it launched its re-branding as GymSports New Zealand at the 2006 National Championships. North Harbour, affiliated to GymSports New Zealand, is a registered high performance centre and the regional service centre for the Harbour region which includes Orewa Gymnastics Club and Mahurangi Gymnastics Club.
North Harbour Gymnastics Centre runs classes from its main centre in Glenfield (at the North Shore Event Centre), Hibiscus Coast Gymnastics Centre (Silverdale Rugby Club) and after-school at Browns Bay School and Belmont Intermediate School.
Our Gymnastics:
Facility:
Excluding auxiliary rooms the gym consists of over 1600m2 of working floor space. A foam pit runs along the entire southern end and along part of the western side. We have two sprung floors, and a rhythmic floor area.
Equipment:
The original equipment was transported from the previous three venues and most of it still exists today. In 1999 we were fortunate to obtain a funding grant from the ASB trust which enabled us to purchase a complete set of FIG standard artistic apparatus and a new sprung floor from Spieth Anderson in Canada.
