She is one of New Zealand's best doll-makers, creating classic dolls with exquisite painting and costuming. Self-taught, the experience she gained in theatre costuming for her daughters has brought precision and imagination to her work.
Driven is the word friends use to describe New Zealand sculptor Sue Todd. She tackles the challenges of doll making as she does all others - with single-minded devotion. Whether the task at hand is homemaking, teaching, or creative endeavours, Sue remains focussed.
Sue started to sculpt in 1996 and immediately stepped into the limelight when her doll Paris won her the title "New Zealand Dollmaker of the Year " This early achievement was quickly followed by others, earned by her dolls Vienna, Georgia and Capri. Each of Sue's dolls are made entirely by the artist from the initial preparation, pouring, cleaning and firing through painting, hand-sewing the costume, and making the wig and footwear. Fabrics used are only quality cotton, wool or silk and each doll's costume differs slightly, making it unique.
