Centrally located by the Viaduct Harbour, the YMCA Tepid Baths incorporate a 25metre heated indoor pool, warm toddler/children’s pool, spa pool, sauna and steam room.
Built in 1914, the Tepid Baths was leased from the Harbour Board and managed by Malcolm Champion, the first Olympic gold medallist for New Zealand (although he was swimming for the Australasian team at that time). The salt-water pools were divided into separate "male" and "female" pools, with the "male" pool being the largest in New Zealand at that time. The heating of both pools was via a cogeneration system with the hot water piped from the tramways power plant. This was considered an engineering masterpiece of that time.
In 1974, the salt water, which was pumped in from the Viaduct basin was replaced by fresh water.
The facility was re-developed in 1986 and the land was sold to Auckland City Council in 1996. YMCA Auckland was awarded the Management Lease in September 1997 and, in partnership with Auckland City, began refurbishment of the Tepid Baths into a modern Aquatic and Fitness Facility whilst retaining the historical character of the building.
Set in the heart of the Auckland Viaduct, YMCA Tepid Baths offers the original "male" pool, a 25m 6-lane lap pool and the original "female pool", which is an 18m 4-lane leisure pool. Major renovations have included new sauna and steam rooms, an upgraded Fitness Club, upgraded male and female changing rooms, tiled reception entrance and cafe.
