Foster and develop opportunities for university students to participate in sport and physical recreation.

Competitive inter-university sport first took place in New Zealand in 1902. USNZ (or more accurately its precursor the NZ University Sports Union) was created in 1957 and became an incorporated society in 1966.

USNZ is the governing body for University Sport in New Zealand. USNZ has all 10 Universities campuses as members who represent more than 140,000 students.

Our Mission:

"To foster and develop opportunities for University Students to participate in sport and physical recreation at all levels."

Working closely with its member Students’ Associations and national sporting organisations, USNZ operates national, regional and international inter-university sporting competitions. This includes over 36 sports in Championship or Games format including the annual NZ University Games, Winter Games (snowsports), Tertiary Rowing Competition, NZU Cricket Championships, prestigious NZU Blues Awards and assisting with regional tertiary sporting challenges. A Triathlon and Sailing Championship is being added to our sporting calendar in 2007.

USNZ is the sole sanctioning body for New Zealand teams attending FISU (International University Sports Federation) events including the World University Games, the World University Winter Games and World University Championships. USNZ and its Sports Councils are also responsible for co-ordinating New Zealand Universities (NZU) representative teams in Trans-Tasman competitions and other international competitions.
