The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 1980 in the USA with the fulfilment of the wish of a 7-year-old boy with leukaemia who wanted to be a policeman. Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety granted his wish with a custom-made uniform, helmet and badge and even a helicopter ride. That one child’s delight in having his wish fulfilled provided the inspiration for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Zealand was launched in 1987 as a national nonprofit organisation with our national office in Auckland. The Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Zealand is a registered charitable trust.

Our first wish was for a 4-year-old boy named Chris with leukaemia who wanted to have Christmas in October. What a treat it was for our volunteers to be able to grant Chris his wish. Santa and his elves arrived on a fire engine with a sack full of gifts. Chris was also given a ride on the fire engine.
