If you like a bit of surf this is the one and also a chance to check out the Gannet colony. From September to March each year you can see the birds nesting on the rocks at the south of the beach. There's a track from the beach to the colony. Muriwai is a beautifully rugged west coast beach with black sand and strong surf. If the kids are going for a swim please supervise them at all times as Muriwai can be a very dangerous swimming beach. Muriwai is about 50 minutes drive from central Auckland. It's best for families to stay close to the main carpark as there's a playground with shade.
