Children from the age of about 4yrs can go canoeing with their parents - but they are more likely to enjoy it from the age of 6yrs. The Puhoi River is tidal, so ring and check out tide timetable before making the trip. Bookings essential.

Panmure Basin Miniature Train Rides

These miniature train rides are organised by the Auckland Society of Motor Engineers and run every Sunday, weather permitting. At $2 a ride, it’s great entertainment for the kids! A model boating lake is right alongside, and for $2 you can have a go with the remote control boats.

Hours: Sunday, 1pm-4pm.

Nikau Cave

Nikau Cave

Nikau Cave is on a working farm in Waikaretu, an easy one and a half hour drive south west of Auckland.

Nikau Cave is one kilometre long, has a stream running through it and is in its natural state. Most of the cave is open and spacious except for a ten-metre length, which must be crawled through. A wide variety of stalactites and stalagmites can be seen including giant pillars, fine straws and flowing shawls. Glowworms and their dewy threads, can be studied up close. Suitable for children 7 and over - give them a call to discuss.

Montgomerie Farm

Montgomerie Farm is a working farm with heaps of activities for the kids. They'll love the demonstrations of farming and the hands-on go at sheep shearing, lamb feeding and cow milking. You can also go horse trekking through the native bush or have a barbeque. Makes for a fantastic day out, or you can stay overnight in their farm-stay accommodation.

Hours: Daily. The farm show is on twice a day at 11am and 2.30pm - bookings are essential.

Manukau Live Steamers

Manukau Live Steamers

Children love riding on these miniature steam and diesel trains, and the fares are only $1 a ride or 12 rides for $10. There are two circuits, with each ride lasting around five minutes. Picnic tables and plenty of grass area make this a nice spot for a family outing. Birthday parties and other groups are welcome, preferably with prior notice.

Budding young golfers from 3-4yrs plus can practice their stroke at Liliputt MiniGolf’s 18 hole course on Tamaki Drive. If that’s not enough excitement, then try their skid cars, although you have to be 1.4 metres tall (roughly 10yrs plus).

Kiwi Valley, an 18 acre property 20 minutes from Auckland city, is a fabulous place for children to experience farm animals close-up. You can visit Old Macdonald Farmyard where you can feed sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits and chicks. There is also a Maze with over 1km of track - look for the mystery animals and hidden caves!

Howick Historical Village

Howick Historical Village

This is a ‘living museum’ ie costumed, trained, historical interpreters role play as if they were 1850’s settlers. The village features original buildings from 1840’s to 1880’s. On ‘Live Days’ there can be up to 40 costumed staff on duty! Howick Historical Village has been rated by an independent survey as being the 4th best family weekend outing in Auckland! Café / Restaurant facilities available.
