Capoeira is a distinctive blend of martial arts, dance, ritual and music that attracts people of all backgrounds. It builds core strength, flexibility and balance – an ideal workout.

The game or “Jogo de Capoeira” is best described as a circle (called a “roda”) in which two players (capoeiristas) display their techniques in a whirlwind of power, speed and agility. They are guided by the music, singing and clapping of the people in the roda.

Hapkido is a Korean martial art of self defence descending from Daito-Ryu Aiki JuJutsu. Hapkido teaches you to defend yourself and others against a variety of attacks. It combines hand strikes and powerful kicking with joint locks, pressure points, holds, takedowns and throws.

Hapkido includes the use of everyday items, such as coins, pens, magazines, and bags as defensive weapons. It also offers very good all round physical training - improving your aerobic capability, strength, stamina and flexibility.

Sport Bay of Plenty's geographical area covers from Waihi Beach in the north to Turangi in the south, to Cape Runaway in the east and to the Kaimai Ranges in the west. The region is split into three regions, these being Eastern BOP, Western BOP, and Rotorua, and there are offices in Tauranga, Whakatane and Rotorua to service these regions.

Drug Free Sport NZ an organisation that aims to provide a sporting environment free of banned doping methods for New Zealand sport and athletes.

The NZOCGA responded to this by instituting a testing programme for all athletes who were in contention for selection to the New Zealand team at those Games. The Hillary Commission (now Sport and Recreation New Zealand - SPARC) contributed to the cost of that programme and the overseeing committee was convened by Ian Boyd.
